Adelaide Fringe 2013 Preview

I'm a little behind on this – it opens officially tomorrow night – but, as I've done in the past few years, I've gone through the Fringe guide and picked out what I think is worth seeing this festival season.

Le Gateau Chocolat – I Heart Chocolat
February 15-17
Garden of Unearthly Delights - Paradiso Spiegeltent

Always, always, always first on my list. In my opinion one of the best cabaret performers of the planet, a stunningly talented singer and a truly engaging character. I first saw him as part of a ensemble show called Company of Strangers, and was just blown away. Since then I've seen him perform solo and as part of another ensemble, La Soirée, in 2012.

I bought my ticket the day they went on sale.

One for the Ugly Girls
February 15-26
Tuxedo Cat

"A painter’s lost inspiration and conventions of beauty are challenged by the unexpected arrival of a life-model at his studio. Warning: frequent nudity, coarse language, redheads."

Hannah Norris won the Adelaide Theatre Guide Curtain Call award for her portrayal of Rachel Corrie in My Name is Rachel Corrie a few years back. I saw her last year in a touring production of David Williamson's Let the Sunshine and she was great in that as well. This show sounds like an interesting one, given that it's been workshopped with the legendary Edward Albee (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?).

La Soirée
March 13-17
Garden of Unearthly Delights - Paradiso Spiegeltent

See my review here. It's a great show, with a range of different acts.

Miss Conlin Confesses
February 23 - March 3
The Promethean

"Have you ever had a clash between passion and profession? Carla has decided to become a teacher, but she doesn't want to give up her night job. Can she manage it? What will happen if they start to converge? A comic tale of two personas sharing one very heavy handbag!"

Carla Conlin's another great local talent. Smart and funny.

Michelle and the Gentleman's Club
February 17 - 23
The Gov/Fox Creek Wines

"In this debut solo performance by one of SA's most acclaimed voices, Michelle Pearson will be backed by a cookin' quartet of Adelaide's most eligible gentlemen and an orchestra hand-picked and directed by the award-winning Peter Johns. A sultry suite of cabaret, jazz and blues, musical theatre and Australian rock."

I saw Michelle more than a few times over the years in local theatre productions and cabaret; she's a great talent and I have no doubt this will be a great show.

The Seven Deadly Sings
February 28 - March 7
TACSI

"The Seven Deadly Sings will take you on an adventure into the realms of the cardinal sins, exploring the indulgence of gluttony and greed, the rage behind wrath, the green eyed monsters of envy, the lethargy of sloth, the prima donna of pride and the soul scorching desires of lust."

Another ensemble show of talented locals, all of whom I've seen on stage, this is bound to be a good show.

Barry Morgan - Organ is Not a Dirty Word
February 15 - March 17
The Garden of Unearthly Delights - The Campanile

"The World of Organs Superstore is under threat of closing down. Is this the end of Barry and his Golden Syrup Sounds? They'll have to pry his Hammond Aurora from his rhine-stoned-fingers first! But not before one last serenade from Skyhooks to Lady Gaga. Barry'll get you in the Moog!"

One of the most unique performers on the festival circuit, Barry Morgan is an absolute delight. Truly hilarious.

DeAnne Smith: Let's Do This
March 7-17
Tuxedo Cat

One of the funniest comics around. I've seen her twice over the last few years – including one I reviewed – and I've laughed myself silly both times.

Randy is Sober
February 15-17
The Garden of Unearthly Delights - The Vagabond

"Randy's back, and this time he's on the wagon. In this razor sharp, hour of stand-up comedy, everybody's favourite felt-faced raconteur casts his acerbic, ping-pong ball gaze on the world around him."

The purple puppet half of the duo Sammy J and Randy, who I've seen a couple of times; I suspect that on his own, the cynical Randy will be pretty damn funny.

My One and Only
March 5-16
Bakehouse Theatre

"What would happen if you got to know your stalker? A thriller about love, obsession and ringing telephones. 'My One and Only' is a seductive tale about the feeling of what answering that foreboding ring could mean. Auslan interpreted show Friday 15 March."

Produced by one of my Twitter friends, this sounds like an interesting show.

Tickets and info here.

Sammy J - Potentially
February 15 - March 1
The Garden of Unearthly Delights - Umbrella Revolution

"Sammy J returns with a brand new solo show about possums, ninjas, blimps, childhood, and the joys of swearing. Featuring stories, confessions, and songs from his ARIA-nominated album Skinny Man, Modern World. You will enjoy yourself. Potentially."

The skinny human half of Sammy J and Randy (see above) – I know he's damn funny.

Tickets and info here.

Sound & Fury: Dirty Fairy Tales, Hamlet & Juliet and Testaclese & the Sack of Rome
February 15 - March 16/February 20 - March 15/February 15 - March 16
Gluttony - Pig Tales

The first Sound & Fury show I saw, Private Dick, was one of the funniest shows I've seen. Since then, though, S&F has had some lineup changes and have not quite matched that production – but their particular brand of comedy (they refer to themselves as 'vaudeville nouveau') is clever and original and worth seeing nonetheless.

Tickets and info here, here and here.

New Coat of Paint
February 21 and March 11
The Promethean

"An intoxicating journey through the songs of blues legend Tom Waits. Intimate, sexy, funny and thoughtful, 'New Coat of Paint' showcases the talents of vocalist Alison Coppe and pianist Aaron Nash, backed by some of Adelaide's finest musicians. Expect jazz, blues, women and booze."

I caught this show last year and it was excellent. Aaron Nash and his band are great local talents.

Animal Farm - Guy Masterson
February 23 and 24
AC Arts - Main Theatre

"This barnyard classic has to be seen to be believed. Masterson fairly ignites this famous tale, bringing the entire story to life in 90 spellbinding minutes of breathtaking physical virtuosity."

I saw this show back in 2011 (maybe), and like just about everything Guy Masterson produces, it's brilliant.

2880 Minutes Late
March 16
Soul Box

"An intimate performance blending slam poetry and physical theatre."

One of the two performers - both NIDA students - is a friend of mine, and this sounds intriguing.

Tickets and info here.

Andrew McLelland's Hang the DJ (feat. DJ Ian Bell)
March 8-16
The Garden of Unearthly Delights - The Deluxe

"From glamorous parties to 50th wedding anniversaries they have heard your request, told you they'd play it and occasionally decided not to. Andrew McClelland (Mix Tape) and Adelaide’s own DJ Ian (Pop!, Bang!) tell all from the sober side of the dance floor. Entry includes post-show dance party."

Two great DJs who are good comedians as well; what's not to like?

Further information

Read about my adventures in Fringes past in these posts - one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight.

I'll be trying to make regular updates here on the blog, but it'll depend on how busy I am. Proper reviews will appear on the ATG website – you can also follow the ATG on Twitter to get frequent updates on when reviews are posted. I'll no doubt be tweeting regularly, so feel free to follow me if you don't already. The Twitter hashtag for the Fringe is #adlfringe.

Also check out Kryztoff Raw for their reviews.

The Fringe ticketing website – where you can search for show information as well as buy tickets – is here. Also check out TalkFringe, which is where people post their own short reviews of shows, with ratings – and, since the ratings are aggregated, there's always a list of the most popular shows, which is handy if you aren't sure what to see.

Hope to see you out and about during Adelaide's fantastic festival season!
